Psalm 119:17-24/Gimel
Be good to your servant and I shall live,
I shall observe your word.
Open my eyes: I shall concentrate
on the marvels of your Law.
Exile though I am on earth,
do not hide your commandments from me.
My soul is overcome
with an incessant longing for your rulings.
You reprove the arrogant, the accursed
who stray from your commandments.
Avert their insults and contempt from me,
since I respect your decrees.
Though princes put me on trial,
your servant will meditate on your statutes,
since your decrees are my delight,
your statutes, are my counsellors.(TJB)
Most of us feel like rules restrict us. But the psalmist delights in them. How can that be? When we acknowledge that we owe our existence to God and his Mercy, His graciousness gives us life and all the supports and comforts we ought to spend our lives in loving service to God’s Law.
Open our eyes to see how Great God has been to us. Let the Light of the Lord shine about us to show the ways of His righteousness. Let us see how wonderful living in His word can be. As a Child of God, I am a stranger in a strange world, and I can become confused by the wicked ways of the flesh. I need the guidance of a good manual, one that will keep me out of trouble and stay in the will of whom I belong. The truth of God’s will is in His commandments, in that I must rely. His commandment will protect my soul, they will meet my every need. They will also confound my enemies.
My heart aches for God, for his Judgments and His Promise. His desire is all that I value, because His will is the only thing of value. His will is unchanging, He sought me from the beginning of time. I can be assured of His longstanding love for me. He is my desire. Teach me how to love, to live to serve and to obey.
Those who do not Love Your Law are accursed. Those who claimed you but refuse to live within Your will and Law, who wander to the ways of the flesh; they are lost. To them is a curse. Don’t let me follow them but keep me in Your Heart. They will scorn the Name of God, they will make mockery of the Law and make rulings against them. Even the rulers of the land will tell us to disobey God and punish us for our Faith. They proclaim against the Law by denying God’s Law by their laws.
But I will not stray. I will not weaken. I will not defy My God by complying with them. My delight is in God! Even when I am prohibitted from declaring God in the public square, I will not falter, Jesus is my Love, my Delight and in His will I will Serve. I am content to Love Jesus and to serve Him always. Never will I stop searching for His will or His Word, for in them is the reward of God’s Law.
