Turning Old on Father’s Day

June 12th, 2008

Sunday is a very big day this year in my life. I will celebrate my 65th birthday, It’s Fathers day and it will be my son’s FIRST Father’s day. For years now my daughter, Sheryl, has called me “Scruffy Old Man” so now I REALLY am a scruffy old man. Now she can’t be accused of lying.

But this will also be another very important anniversary in my life. Thirty-nine years ago, on my birthday, I met a young lady with whom I fell in love with very quickly and married just three month later. Because of my love for her, I came to know Christ, accepted the Reconciliation of the Father and raised my children in the admonition of the Lord. Every year I say the same thing; My wife was my best birthday present, she is a gift of God.

I say that with all certainty because even though I did not have a relationship with God at the time, when I walking down the aisle with my new bride, I KNEW that God wanted this woman as my life-mate. I never regretted it and we still love each other much as we did as two young people. My wife is my Salvation in as much as she opened the doors of my heart that I might see the Love of Jesus.

But now I am OLD! Old and in Love with God. It is about time. My son Luke has made me proud in his walk with the LORD and my daughter-in-love, Julia is simply the best. And they have given me a grandson! A grandson to love and to hold a lot and to spoil (a little), and to share my love with.

When my father was ninety-five years old, he confessed to me that he wanted to live to be a hundred and he was afraid that he wouldn’t make it. Well, he was right because he died the next year. But I promised him that I would make it for him if he failed. So now I am looking forward to being OLD for at least the next thirty-five years. I also told my wife that we must live long enough to celebrate our seventy-fifth wedding anniversary and that means I have to live to be 101 and she, 92. I promised God and I know that God wants me to keep my word, doesn’t He?

Anyway, I’m very happy to be a part of the Old Man’s Club and hope I live long enough to see my son, Luke, join me. And by the way, happy Father’s Day son, welcome to the club I’ve enjoyed being in, Fatherhood.

This is an exciting Father’s Day, isn’t it. As a youth (when goals are simple) I wanted to live in three different centuries so my goal was to live past 128 years old. Unfortunately, medical science hasn’t advanced as much as I had hoped so the outcome doesn’t look promising. On the plus side, that’s not really one of my goals anymore.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you (all) on Friday when we come up to visit. Hope you’ve been staying in shape because Corbin has grown so much since last time you saw him.
